The Grapes

Sercial (Esgana-cão)
Sercial is a light-skinned Portuguese grape variety, increasingly rare and now planted almost exclusively on the volcanic island of Madeira. It has been suggested that it is the same variety as Esgana Cao (dog strangler), which is still grown and used on the mainland.

The base wines have high acidity, and can be aromatic. This grape variety makes rich, aromatic dry whites wines.

Bunches of tiny yellowish-green grapes are small and compact.

Arinto
One of the oldest and most traditional Portuguese grape varietals, Arinto is characterized by its elevated natural acidity, conferring acidity, structure and excellent aging potential in wines.

Because of this, it is often used in blended wines in which it imparts freshness, minerality and longevity; gaining elegance and complexity as it evolves.

Arinto is also often used in the production of sparkling wines and is the third most planted grape varietal in the Setúbal Peninsula. In the nose, it exudes notes of mineral, green apple, lemon and lime.

Galego Dourado
Fertile, vigorous, not very productive, early budding and ripening. Susceptible to coulure, downy and powdery mildews and especially to botrytis bunch rot. Best suited to clay-limestone soils.

Galego Dourado continues to survive on Portugal’s Atlantic coast around Lisbon despite severe urban encroachment on its vineyards. It is one of the principal varieties in the sweet, fortified blended wines from the Carcavelos appellation.

Wines are generally rounded, full-bodied and aromatic.

In the last decades it has become a variety of rare grapes.

Antão Vaz
This is one of the most prized varieties of the Alentejo and the Setubal Peninsula wines, until recently grown almost exclusively around Vidigueira. Well suited to the warm and sunny climate, it is reliable and productive, consistent in its ripening.

The brunches are big and not too tightly packed, the grapes large, with tough skins.

As a rule it produces firm, full-bodied, well-structured wines. Made as a single variety, it has lively aromas, with hints of ripe tropical fruits, tangerine peel and something mineral, along with good structure and body.

If picked early, it gives wines with vibrant aroma and crisp acidity. Left to ripen longer, it can reach high levels of alcohol, making it a good candidate for barrel maturation.

It is often blended with Roupeiro and Arinto, which contribute refreshing acidity.
